ROOT CANAL RETREATMENT

In some rare cases, a root canal may fail to work in the way that it should, meaning the treated tooth may not heal correctly or a patient may experience issues post-procedure that can jeopardize the tooth or treatment itself. The root canal retreatment requires the dentist to remove the previous crown and packing material, which cleans the root canal and then is followed by the repacking and re-crowning of the tooth. In general, a root canal retreatment is essentially the same thing as a root canal, besides the fact that this procedure removes the previous material.

Root canal treatments and retreatments are done in order to save the natural tooth, as opposed to a tooth extraction. Root canal retreatments are certainly a better alternative if the condition of the damaged tooth permits. If a tooth has sufficient bone support, along with a solid foundation and enough bone to support it, it has a greater chance of being saved. Going forward with a root canal retreatment is much less expensive compared to other alternatives. For instance, other treatments like dental implants, bridgework, and other forms of restorative dentistry can be extremely costly. Additionally, restorative dentistry, such as dental implants, bridgework, and other alternatives require more maintenance in the long run. If root canal retreatment is something that you are interested in, our team can provide you with highly effective results in order to save your natural tooth, as opposed to having to have it completely replaced.

Why is Root Canal Retreatment Required?

Root canal retreatment may be required for a number of reasons. And while the idea of having to get your root canal treatment redone may not sound ideal, it is actually a straightforward process that can provide you with the effective results you need to restore your smile’s function, health, and overall look. Generally, root canal retreatment can be done in 1-3 visits, depending on the condition of your current root canal and other factors. There are many reasons why your initial root canal treatment may have failed, including:

Cracked crown that is leaking filling substance

Narrow or curved root canals not treated properly in the initial procedure

New decay on the treated tooth

New fracture on the treated tooth

Saliva setting into the restorative structure

Keep in mind that the reasons mentioned above are just a few examples and are not limited as to why a root canal retreatment may be necessary. If you have experienced any of the symptoms mentioned above, then it is imperative that you contact a trusted dentist that specializes in root canal retreatment in West Hollywood to learn if this procedure is right for you. What to Expect From a Root Canal Retreatment

Having a root canal retreatment is very similar to the original root canal treatment. However, if it has been a while since your initial procedure, then your dentist may work with more advanced technologies and methods to make your procedure more efficient and comfortable the second time around. Once anesthetic has been administered, your dentist will remove the dental crown and reopen the tooth. The root canal filling will then be removed, along with any tissue that was left untreated or has become newly infected.

Your dentist will examine the canal to ensure that every part of it has been effectively treated and once the tooth has been completely disinfected, it will then be refilled and sealed with a temporary crown or filling. Shortly after your initial appointment, you will return to our office for the final restoration.
